CLOS DU CALVAIRE - CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE

Clos du Calvaire was founded in 1923 by Alphonse Mayard and Marie Louise Deydier, this historic wine would later give its name to the Châteauneuf du Pape estate. Calvary symbolizes the annual work, the labor and care that we bring to our vines all year round. This echoes the peasant culture, the rural lifestyle and our history.

Located on the outskirts of the prestigious village of Châteauneuf du Pape, the family estate has been perpetuated for five generations historically by the Mayard family, then Roumieux.

The property has 24 plots that extend over 33 hectares of vines with a great diversity of soils and grape varieties. Each cuvee is made from single terroirs, they reflect the rigorous and passionate work of an entire team, from the management of the vines, to the winemaking.

Built on a hill 400 feet above sea level, the AOC Châteauneuf du Pape was the first Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée created in 1936 by Baron Leroy. Benefiting from an exceptional Mediterranean climate, the cold and rainy winter allows the soil to recharge with water.

Summer intense sunshine leads to exceptional maturity and concentration, and brings sugar, color and mature tannins. The mistral, the winemaker 's best ally , prevents frost by stirring the air in the plots, it dries the vineyard  after a rainy episode, and reduces disease pressure.

The estate owns about twenty plots mixing 11 different grape varieties, spread across the appellation. Some were planted over a century ago, shortly after the phylloxera period.
